Alejandro's guest talk

Film & Media Take Exciting Trips

24/10/2025

Our Film and Media Arts Production Arts students enjoyed a range of trips recently, helping them in their coursework and developing their skills!

Firstly, the course visited the Encounters Film Festival 2025 at the Watershed in Bristol. The class got the chance to see several exciting and thought-provoking independent films including There Will Come Soft Rains, Revert and Wild Dog.

The students also got the chance to see a Filmmaker Masterclass from documentarian Havana Marking. She is known for documentaries including Undercover: Exposing the Far Right and Afghan Star, which won two awards at the Sundance Film Festival. Her filmography also includes Smash & Grab, where she gained access to the world’s most successful diamond thieves and The Kleptocrats, a gripping story of financial fraud.

The Filmmaker Masterclass discussed risk-taking and Havana Marking’s filmmaking career in association with the Documentary Film Council and the Bristol Doc Club, hosted by DFC Co-CEO and Senior Lecturer in Film and Television at the University of Bristol, Steve Presence.

In another trip, the course visited ICVL in Bristol for a talk by Alejandro Acin about Photography, publishing and exhibitions. Some of Alejandro’s projects which were discussed included All that Flows Comes To Rest, a fascinating exploration of Avonmouth & Bristol’s industrial port community as well as Roots & Worlds which focussed on a collaborative school for ecological encounters.

After the talk, the group visited Gender Stories – an exhibition at the Bristol Museum which examines the fluid, multifaceted world of gender across cultures, eras, and personal experiences. They also had time to take photographs around the city, building skills in real life locations.

These trips form part of the Art, Film, Game and Graphic Design Careers Excellence Hub. At University Centre Weston our approach goes beyond the traditional classroom setting. Through industry speakers, workshops, employer projects, and more, we equip our learners with the real-world experiences and insights that set them apart in the competitive job market. It’s not just about getting a job; it’s about standing out from the crowd when they embark on their job searches.
