Today we’re highlighting our third-year BA Early Years Education students! These students have been diving deep into their Creative Reflective Practitioner module. This module focusses on exploring and celebrating their experiential learning from across all three years of the degree. To maximise their learning in this module, the learners have had a trip and a guest lecture!
The lecture was from UCW Art and Design & Graphic Design lecturer Ronnie Houselander-Cook who led a hands-on zine making workshop that encouraged students to reflect about themselves as education practitioners. Students worked with abstract provocations including: ‘You tomorrow’, ‘Education should look like’ and ‘Motivation feels like’. Ronnie was able to share her expertise in zine making techniques and arts based methods with the class.
The class also took an inspiring trip to the Arnolfini in Bristol to experience Mounira Al Solh’s A Land as Big as Her Skin, an exhibition exploring themes of identity, migration, trauma, inequality, and gender. Born in Beirut, Lebanon Al Solh incorporates personal memories, powerful political statements as well as joy & humour. These themes are all important to consider when in an Early Years setting as each child will have different lived experiences, allowing our future practitioners to understand and support.
This guest lecture and trip forms part of the Education and Early Years Careers Excellence Hub. University Centre Weston’s Career Excellence Hubs are designed to be the launching pad for our learners’ careers. In a world where connections and relevant skills matter more than ever, these hubs offer a holistic approach that prepares learners to thrive in their chosen industries. With the support of these hubs, our learners are well-equipped to make a significant impact in their professional journeys.
