Today we’re highlighting our third-year BA Early Years Education students! These students have been diving deep into their Creative Reflective Practitioner module. This module focusses on exploring and celebrating their experiential learning from across all three years of the degree. To maximise their learning in this module, the learners have had a trip and a guest lecture!
The guest lecture was from Ronnie Houselander-Cook who led a hands-on zine making workshop that encouraged students to express identity, voice, and creativity in new ways. She also incorporated the important topic of appropriation in art, leading powerful discussions about the topic. Ronnie is a former Weston College and UCW student, allowing her teaching to be relatable and for her to pass on her skills and knowledge to new generations of students!
The class also took an inspiring trip to the Arnolfini in Bristol to experience Mounira Al Solh’s A Land as Big as Her Skin, an exhibition exploring themes of identity, migration, trauma, inequality, and gender. Born in Beirut, Lebanon Al Solh incorporates personal memories, powerful political statements as well as joy & humour. These themes are all important to consider when in an Early Years setting as each child will have different lived experiences, allowing our future practitioners to understand and support.
This guest lecture and trip forms part of the Education and Early Years Careers Excellence Hub. University Centre Weston’s Career Excellence Hubs are designed to be the launching pad for our learners’ careers. In a world where connections and relevant skills matter more than ever, these hubs offer a holistic approach that prepares learners to thrive in their chosen industries. With the support of these hubs, our learners are well-equipped to make a significant impact in their professional journeys.
Course lecturer Lauren said: “We are so proud of their reflection, creativity, and professional growth, what a fantastic way to celebrate their final year of study!” There’s still time to apply for our Early Years Education and Education, Society and Childhood courses!
