UCW BA (Hons) Art and Design graduates Hajnal and Ruth are celebrating a remarkable achievement as their artwork has been selected for the Royal West of England Academy’s (RWA) Annual Open Exhibition. For Hajnal this is the second year running, and for Ruth this is the third year in a row, making this truly impressive! We caught up with Hajnal to find out more!
“I was delighted, super happy and full of pride when I got the news,” she shared. “As an emerging artist who is building up her reputation, this is truly fantastic feedback. Thousands of artworks were submitted, but only around 400 pieces have been accepted. Being showcased amongst the best contemporary artists is uplifting!”
Her piece, SAGITTA, is part of her ongoing Boat Series — a body of work exploring symbolism and imperfection. The organic sculpture was created using willow, recycled paper, and thread, and was inspired by stargazing.
“I love the boat-symbolism, natural materials, and the artistic imperfections,” she explained. “We are all sailing through the ocean of our lives.”
Reflecting on her time at UCW, she credits the Art and Design degree with providing her with the practical skills that continue to support her career. “It’s not just about developing your art, but also about the research behind it, and even learning how to write important documents like artist statements that are vital for submissions.”
For those considering following in her footsteps, her advice is clear: “Don’t hesitate. Just jump into it and enjoy the boost needed for becoming closer to your dreams!”
Her sculpture, SAGITTA, is currently on display at the RWA 172nd Annual Open Exhibition in Bristol, running from 6 September – 28 December 2025. Showing support for their former students, this year’s cohort of Art and Design students visited the exhibition and saw Hajnal and Ruth’s pieces!
