Supported to Achieve: Giuseppe’s Journey into Nursing

28/05/2025

We caught up with Giuseppe, a Nursing Associate degree apprentice at University Centre Weston (UCW), to hear about his experience combining study with real world work in the NHS.

Reflecting on his time at UCW so far, Giuseppe said the strong community has been a highlight.

“One of the biggest highlights of my time at UCW has been the strong sense of support and community among both students and staff. The teaching environment is engaging, and I’ve really appreciated the opportunities to apply what I learn in a real-world setting through my apprenticeship. Attending conferences, networking with professionals, and working alongside experienced practitioners have also been valuable experiences that have enhanced my learning.”

Giuseppe is completing his apprenticeship within UHBW, working in OPAU, a geriatric care setting.

“UCW has provided a fantastic balance of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, which has been essential for my development as a nursing associate.”

He also gave credit to his tutors for their support.

“Yes, I’d love to give a special mention to my main tutors Maryanne, Edith, and Ellie who have been incredibly supportive throughout my journey. Their guidance, encouragement, and willingness to go the extra mile have made a huge difference in my learning experience. Recently, Dayna joined us, and I’ve found her teaching style really engaging.”

Giuseppe highlighted the value of UCW’s HEART team and the degree apprenticeship structure.

“The HEART team has been fantastic in providing well-being and academic support… Their support has made a big difference in helping me stay focused and motivated throughout the course.”

“Being able to earn while studying has been a game-changer. It has reduced financial stress and allowed me to focus more on my learning and professional development.”

Looking ahead, Giuseppe plans to continue his career in healthcare.

“Once I complete my apprenticeship, I plan to progress to a full nursing degree and continue building my career within the NHS… I also want to use my experience to mentor future nursing associates and contribute to improving patient care and safety.”

“The WEIoT facilities at UCW have been excellent in enhancing my learning experience… This hands-on approach has been invaluable in building my confidence and competence.”
