Studying Graphic Design at UCW

16/12/2025

The BA (Hons) Graphic Design course at University Centre Weston (UCW) is designed to equip students with the creative, technical and professional skills needed to succeed in today’s diverse and evolving design industry.

An element of this approach is the balance between digital design and hands-on, practical making – something that is clearly demonstrated through learners getting the opportunity to learn how to screen print, in the first year of the course.

The course encourages students to question their understanding of the world around them, using creative problem-solving to explore not only design outcomes but also the wider social and environmental impact of their work.

This ethos runs throughout the curriculum, which exposes students to a wide range of subject areas and techniques, allowing their knowledge, creativity and confidence to develop at each level of study.

For first-year student Freya, screen printing has been a standout experience. Reflecting on the process, she says: “I’ve really enjoyed the screen-printing element of the course because it’s such a creative and hands-on process.

“It’s been one of my favourite modules so far, as it gives you the chance to work physically with colour rather than just designing on a computer.” Working from a motion-based brief, Freya created a three-colour print inspired by volcanic movement, highlighting the importance of experimentation, precision and problem-solving in the printmaking process.

The module also benefits from strong technical support and well-equipped facilities. As Freya notes: “The lecturers have been really supportive throughout, and the facilities are great – we have access to all the equipment and can mix our own colours.”

This level of access allows students to fully explore their ideas and develop confidence in specialist processes.

Beyond individual modules, the programme places a strong emphasis on employability, ethical awareness and industry engagement.

With excellent links to creative professionals and a curriculum that builds towards the establishment of an in-house design agency in the final year, UCW’s Graphic Design course enables students to take ownership of their creative skills and shape them into a viable professional pathway.
