Samantha Barnett, a BSc (Hons) Environmental Health Practitioner student at University Centre Weston, has demonstrated unwavering dedication and excellence throughout her degree apprenticeship. Balancing full-time employment at Mid Devon District Council with her studies, she has consistently excelled academically while also supporting her peers. Her outstanding attendance, commitment to learning, and professional contributions have earned her a well-deserved nomination for Sciences Student of the Year.
Samantha chose UCW for its flexible learning structure, which allowed her to continue working while earning a degree accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH). Reflecting on her time at UCW, she highlights the impact of its hybrid learning model, which she and her cohort helped pioneer: “We were among the first students at UCW to experience hybrid learning, and it’s rewarding to know that we’ve helped establish this approach for future apprentices.”
Her contributions extend beyond the classroom. As a student representative, she has made valuable contributions to discussions and supported her fellow students. Her dissertation on housing overcrowding and homelessness is expected to have real-world significance in her field, showcasing her commitment to addressing pressing societal challenges.
Samantha credits UCW with broadening her understanding of environmental health, refining her problem-solving approach, and enhancing her time management skills – vital for balancing work, study, and family life. She has particularly valued the opportunity to learn alongside like-minded professionals, saying, “I’ve enjoyed spending time learning with colleagues who have become both friends and professional connections. Plus, studying by the coast has its perks – having an ice cream on the beach during lunch breaks was a definite highlight!”
Looking ahead, Samantha plans to continue her career in environmental health, striving for excellence in her field. She acknowledges that without the degree apprenticeship model, pursuing this qualification would not have been possible, and she encourages others to take the leap: “Go for it! You don’t know where it will take you, and you’ll be surprised at what you can achieve.”
Her hard work, professionalism, and positive attitude make her a true role model, and we are proud to celebrate her success.
