Millie at the UCW Awards

Millie Enriches the UCW Community

14/07/2025

Millie Smith, a BA (Hons) Professional Music Performance and Production student, was shortlisted for the Student Community Champion Award in recognition of her remarkable initiative, positivity, and dedication to enriching the student experience at University Centre Weston.

Since joining UCW, Millie has gone above and beyond to support her peers and foster a sense of community. Whether it’s organising live music events or sharing her own industry experience, she is a driving force behind many of the opportunities available to fellow students. One standout example was her organisation of a charity gig at Electric Banana, which raised over £500. This event not only showcased the talent within her cohort but also demonstrated Millie’s ability to bring people together for a good cause.

Her contributions extend beyond the stage. Millie even delivered a guest lecture in a business module, providing her classmates with real-world insights into the world of music promotion. Her tutors praise her not just for her commitment, but for the kindness and encouragement she brings to every interaction. “It is so lovely to have been nominated. I was so shocked when I heard – I couldn’t believe it!” she said of her nomination.

Having first connected with UCW through its Summer Show, Millie felt an immediate affinity for the campus and its atmosphere. Studying here felt like a natural next step following her A Levels at Weston College. “I already knew the campus and it helped make the transition a lot easier and less daunting”, she explained.

Throughout her time at UCW, Millie has continued to develop professionally and personally. She has grown in confidence and embraced opportunities to teach, both within UCW and in the wider community, including a talk to students at Churchill Academy. These experiences have shaped her career aspirations, with a PGCE and a future in teaching firmly in her sights.

The supportive environment and practical facilities – from the library to professional studios – have also played a key role in Millie’s success. She credits UCW’s staff and the HEART team for helping her navigate challenges and stay focused.

Her advice to future students is simple: “Do it! The course leaders and staff are so supportive and you are given loads of opportunities to grow both personally and professionally.”
