Mark Jackson embodies professionalism, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to both his studies and his peers. From his first day at University Centre Weston, he has been a role model – sharing knowledge, supporting classmates, and creating an inclusive and encouraging learning environment. Whether in the classroom, his workplace, or among university staff, Mark’s ability and enthusiasm make him stand out. His peers often describe him as a great friend and a reliable source of support, perspective, and advice.
Mark is currently completing his FdSc Assistant Practitioner (Health and Social Care) degree apprenticeship while working full-time with Speech Therapy and Dietetics at Weston General Hospital. He values the hands-on learning experience that his course provides, stating, “The course has developed my confidence to question longstanding methods and give ideas for change.” His workplace mentors speak highly of him, regularly praising his thoroughness and ability to introduce innovative ideas to the department. They have even remarked, “In five years, Mark will be running the department!” – a testament to their belief in his leadership potential.
Mark has embraced every opportunity at UCW, from academic challenges to fundraising events. He and his fellow Assistant Practitioner students, along with their lecturer, raised over £200 for charity during RAG Week through a cake sale – where his homemade brownies were a surprise hit! His proactive nature extends to his studies, where he has helped classmates by sharing resources and even presenting a guide on how to structure their apprenticeship portfolios. “If it benefited me, hopefully it may have benefited them too”, he explains.
Despite balancing full-time work, additional jobs, and university, Mark has excelled academically, achieving over 85% in both his anatomy exam and communication presentation. Reflecting on his journey, he admits, “At times, I still feel like an imposter when I talk about university…but to be in a group of working people with similar outlooks has helped me think, ‘Oh, let’s just give it a go’.”
Looking ahead, Mark aspires to qualify as an NHS practitioner in a rotational role, allowing him to explore different areas of healthcare. He credits UCW for preparing him for the increasing responsibilities in his field, saying, “The more responsibilities you take on in healthcare, the more knowledge and confidence you need – UCW has helped me develop both.”
For those considering UCW, Mark’s advice is simple: “If you like getting to know the people you work and learn with really well, I’d really recommend studying here.”
