Joseph Marcal Ham’s journey at University Centre Weston is a testament to his determination, resilience, and passion for early years education. As one of the few men in the sector, where male practitioners make up less than 2% of the workforce, Joseph is already breaking barriers. His enthusiasm and drive make him a role model for others who may be hesitant to enter the field.
Starting his degree as the only young man in a group of experienced female practitioners could have been daunting, but Joseph’s fun-loving personality and dedication quickly earned him a valued place among his peers. His tutors praise his ability to think critically and creatively, immersing himself in research to push his understanding further. “I believe I’ve been nominated due to my dedication to my studies and my enthusiasm for the subject”, Joseph shares. “Throughout my degree, I’ve worked hard to explore creative and innovative approaches to early years education.”
Joseph’s time at UCW has been marked by both academic and personal growth. “I’ve gained confidence in my abilities and learned to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth”, he reflects.
Despite facing the sudden loss of his father in his second year, Joseph remained committed to his studies, never allowing challenges to hinder his progress. His resilience, kindness, and unwavering positivity have made a lasting impact on those around him.
A highlight of Joseph’s studies has been exploring childhood theories, particularly those of Piaget and Vygotsky, as well as researching the concept of risky play in international early years settings. His passion for learning extends beyond the classroom, with a strong commitment to bridging academic knowledge with real-world practice. “UCW has given me a strong foundation in educational theories and hands-on experience in applying them.”
Now working within a nursery setting, Joseph plans to further his studies with a PGCE, ultimately aiming for a career in primary education. His long-term goal? To become a teacher, and perhaps even a headteacher one day. With his drive and dedication, there’s no doubt that Joseph will inspire the next generation of learners.
For anyone considering UCW, his advice is clear: “If you’re looking for a university where you’ll be supported, challenged, and inspired, UCW is a fantastic choice.”
