UCW Criminology and Public Services learners, alongside Weston College students had a guest lecture from Tony Jay, a former Detective Sergeant for Gloucestershire Constabulary. Tony was a central figure in the Fred and Rose West case, one of the most infamous serial killer cases in the world.
Tony gave an in-depth look at the history of Fred and Rose West before the case started, before covering each element of the case in strong detail. He covered the crimes themselves that shocked Britain and how these were discovered by police. He then spoke about the difficult and high-profile investigation to recover the victims. During the investigation, Tony spoke with Fred West and interviewed him for over seven hours. Finally, he recalled the shocking death of Fred, and the prosecution’s fight to convict Rose for her crimes.
Tony gave a detailed account of the specialist techniques that were used to catch and convict the killers. These included criminal profiling, as well as forensic science. Tony also shared lesser-known insights into the case, rarely seen in documentaries and films about the murders.
