Emma-Louise Harraway is in the final year of her Public Services degree and was shortlisted for Business and Professional Student of the Year. Her time at University Centre Weston has been defined by resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to personal and professional growth.
Since starting her degree, Emma-Louise has consistently demonstrated exceptional dedication, overcoming significant personal challenges along the way. She has faced physical health struggles, including meningitis and pancreatitis, alongside the demands of her studies and responsibilities as a single mother. Despite these obstacles, she has shown incredible perseverance. “I have not quit, even when the circumstances were incredibly tough. This resilience has been a driving force in my academic journey.”
Emma-Louise’s passion for supporting others has shaped her ambitions, particularly in working with young offenders. A pivotal experience during her studies was her placement at HMPPS Eastwood Park, which deepened her interest in prisoner rehabilitation. “My personal and professional goal is to provide individuals with the tools they need to change their lives, should they choose to do so.” Alongside her degree, she has also completed a teaching qualification, further equipping her with the skills to support and educate individuals in challenging circumstances.
Throughout her time at UCW, Emma-Louise has embraced every opportunity to develop her knowledge and confidence. Guest speakers and employer interactions have broadened her understanding of the public sector, while the small class sizes and supportive environment at UCW have provided her with a strong foundation for success. She speaks highly of the encouragement she has received from staff, particularly her tutor, the Diversity & Inclusion team, and the HEART team, who have helped her navigate both academic and personal challenges. “There is so much to say about the support I have experienced at UCW that I feel words may not fully do it justice. They have often seen potential in me that I could not recognise in myself.”
As she approaches graduation, Emma-Louise reflects on how much she has grown during her time at UCW. She is proud of her achievements and excited to celebrate them with her family. Looking ahead, she is eager to pursue a career in the public sector, where she can continue to make a meaningful impact. Her journey is a testament to her strength, determination, and passion for helping others.
