Thomas Warr, an apprentice studying for his Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) in Mechanical Engineering, was recognised for his dedication, skill, and ambition. His commitment to consistently high standards has made him a standout student and a valued team member.
Having completed his apprenticeship at Weston College, Thomas chose to continue his studies at University Centre Weston, where he could build on his existing knowledge in a familiar and supportive environment. “I picked this course because I believe it’s the next step in gaining more engineering experience and skills that will help me develop in my career”, he explains. His dedication to self-improvement is evident, consistently pushing beyond course requirements to expand his knowledge.
One of Thomas’s biggest achievements has been mastering industry-standard software like SolidWorks. Initially struggling with the transition from hand-drawn designs to CAD, he overcame the challenge with the support of lecturers and self-study. “I didn’t have much prior knowledge, but with extra study and guidance, I built my confidence and improved.” Now, he applies these skills to real-world projects at the National Composites Centre.
The facilities at UCW have played a key role in Thomas’s development, particularly the opportunity to design in SolidWorks and create prototypes using 3D printing. Practical sessions with composite materials have deepened his understanding of manufacturing processes, reinforcing his technical expertise. He has also refined his problem-solving and project management skills, key attributes for success in the industry.
Being shortlisted for a UCW Award was a proud moment for Thomas. “It feels great to be recognised for my hard work, and it motivates me to keep pushing forward”, he says. His strong work ethic and willingness to take on additional challenges set him apart, as he actively seeks opportunities to develop beyond the standard curriculum.
Looking ahead, Thomas is considering further qualifications to expand his expertise and open new career opportunities. His aspirations include working in research engineering, motorsport, or even training the next generation of composite engineers. His time at UCW has strengthened his technical skills and confidence, preparing him for an exciting future in the engineering industry.
With his determination and passion for innovation, Thomas was a deserving finalist for Engineering & Construction Student of the Year.
