Catching Up with Folu

17/07/2025

Today we’re catching up with Criminology and Public Services learner Folu to hear about his time at UCW and how he’s got on this year!

The highlight of Folu’s time at UCW has been meeting new people and participating in the activities offered by the HEART Team, such as the cooking session. This has helped to build his confidence and communication skills!

Folu told us that trips and guest speakers have been “essential” to his university experience. He has had the opportunity to visit Bristol Crown Court, the Police HQ at Portishead, the British Heart Foundation, JESIP Learning Exercise, and a Police Training Exercise. He said: “These experiences have given me a clearer understanding of my field and enhanced my confidence when speaking with employers.” These activities helped Folu to broaden his knowledge and make informed decisions about his future career.

These activities form part of the Uniformed Services and Sport Careers Excellence Hub. University Centre Weston’s Career Excellence Hubs are designed to be the launching pad for our learners’ careers. In a world where connections and relevant skills matter more than ever, these hubs offer a holistic approach that prepares learners to thrive in their chosen industries. With the support of these hubs, our learners are well-equipped to make a significant impact in their professional journeys.

Folu credits the supportive environment created by teachers and classmates for allowing him to develop his skills and connect with professionals in the industry. Connecting with these professionals has given him new perspectives and enhanced his abilities, helping him prepare for his chosen career, working either in the police force or the prison service.

Folu described UCW’s HEART Team and support services as “fantastic!” Folu went on to say that: “They provide a welcoming and understanding environment, making it easy to communicate any concerns. Speaking with them feels like a weight lifted off my shoulders, as they genuinely listen and offer helpful advice.” The academic staff have also helped Folu, by creating engaging lessons and offering helpful feedback.
