Carly Shows Perseverance and Growth

29/08/2025

Returning to higher education can be a challenge, but Carly Hawken, a BSc (Hons) Counselling student at University Centre Weston, has shown remarkable resilience, dedication, and passion for her subject. Her commitment to her studies and peers has earned her a well-deserved nomination for Counselling, Education and Health Student of the Year.

Carly’s journey has been one of perseverance and growth. After facing personal challenges that led her to defer her studies, she made the courageous decision to return and has thrown herself into every aspect of the course. She has taken on the role of Student Representative, actively contributes to discussions, and has embraced the opportunities available through her placement.

Reflecting on her return, Carly shares, “I felt I had failed when I dropped out last year, so receiving this nomination is truly lovely and boosts my confidence that pressing the pause button isn’t failure. Even when things are tough, you can take a step back, return, and succeed.”

Her time at UCW has given her invaluable personal and professional development opportunities. From guest speakers and hands-on experiences to supportive supervision groups, she has gained a deeper understanding of counselling in practice.

“I have been in my placement for four months now, and this experience has significantly deepened my understanding and application of the theory we are taught in lectures. Our supervision groups genuinely support my work with clients, particularly when I experience feelings of imposter syndrome. Having this support makes me feel valued and encourages me to continue learning and growing.”

Beyond her academic achievements, Carly’s supportive nature has made a lasting impact on her peers. She consistently uplifts those around her, offering guidance and encouragement. Her enthusiasm for counselling is evident, and she is already looking ahead to a future where she hopes to specialise in supporting women postnatally and eventually teach the subject at a higher education level.

Carly’s nomination is a testament to her strength, perseverance, and passion for her field. Her journey at UCW has shaped her as a student and as a future counsellor determined to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. We are incredibly proud of her achievements and can’t wait to see where her journey takes her next.
