Learning Beyond the Classroom: Students Visit Exmoor Zoo

02/02/2026

Our Animal Conservation, Behaviour and Welfare, BSC (Hons) students recently visited Exmoor Zoo recently, turning classroom learning into real-world experience.

Students had the opportunity to get up close with an impressive range of species, from feline and canine predators to birds, invertebrates and exotic animals.

As they explored the zoo, students encountered species many had never seen before, including the legendary Beast of Exmoor and the striking shoebill stork.

These encounters brought key themes from across the three-year programme to life, supporting modules such as Animal Behaviour, Animal Ethics and Welfare, and Conservation and Wildlife Management.

Throughout the visit, students gained valuable insight into endangered and vulnerable species and learned how modern zoos collaborate globally to support conservation initiatives.

Specialist workshops provided opportunities to deepen understanding, while animal feeding times allowed students to observe and analyse behaviour within captive environments.

The trip was both educational and inspiring, offering a memorable insight into the diversity of the animal kingdom and the vital role zoos play in conservation, research and welfare.
