Applying to university is a big step, and your UCAS application is your chance to make a strong first impression. Here are the tips that you need to know:
Use a Personal Email Address
Your school email might expire after you leave, so use a personal email that you check regularly. Make sure it’s professional—ideally just your name. You’ll receive important updates from UCAS and universities, so don’t miss out!
Be Clear and Concise
UCAS applications have word and character limits, so make every sentence count. Avoid waffle and jargon. When listing qualifications, double-check the UCAS Tariff points—some courses weigh them differently. Accuracy here can affect your offers, so make sure your grades and course codes are correct.
Promote Yourself
We often find it difficult to talk about ourselves positively—it can feel awkward or boastful. But your UCAS application is not the time to be modest. This is your opportunity to show universities why you are the best candidate for the course.
Think about your strengths, achievements, and experiences. Have you overcome challenges? Taken on responsibilities? Developed skills through part-time work, volunteering, or hobbies? These all count. Use your personal statement to highlight what makes you unique and how your background has prepared you for university-level study.
Show Your Passion for the Subject
Your personal statement should demonstrate genuine enthusiasm. Have you read books, watched documentaries, joined clubs, or taken part in relevant projects? Mention them! Admissions teams love to see curiosity and commitment beyond the classroom.
No AI When Writing Your Personal Statement
Your personal statement should reflect your voice, experiences, and motivations. Admissions tutors want to hear about you—not a generic AI-generated essay. Use your own words to explain why you’re passionate about your chosen subject, what you’ve done to explore it, and what makes you a great candidate. Authenticity always stands out.
Prepare a Portfolio Ahead of Time (If Required)
If you’re applying for creative courses like Art, Design, Architecture, or Media, you may need a portfolio. Start early! Gather your best work, and make sure it’s well-organised and relevant. Some universities have specific guidelines, so check them carefully and tailor your portfolio accordingly.
