How to Find the Career for You

13/08/2025

We caught up with UCW’s new Careers & Employability Coordinator, Zoe to find out all about her and how she can support students for their future!

What do you do as part of your role?

“My role is to provide careers support to all UCW students who may be looking for graduate employment, further study, self-employment or other jobs. We also offer degree apprentices support throughout their time with us! Support can be accessed to up to 2 years after you leave, so get in touch even if you have graduated.”

How do you help students find the right career for them?

“I can help students to identify the skills employers need and support them on the journey to get those skills! I identify what the employers want, and for each student I link how their time at UCW can help them to get those skills through work placements, volunteering and other opportunities. If you want support to find these opportunities, I can help you!

“As part of considering what future jobs they might enjoy, I help students reflect on their own skills, interests and experiences, including how their UCW degree learning fits into that journey.  Taking part in opportunities such as work placements, trips and group tasks builds confidence, skills and overall employability.  If you want support with your career plans, I am here to help you!”

What career resources are available?

“We have a whole suite of UCW careers resources in SharePoint. These cover topics like working in relevant industries, support with written applications and interview help.”

What is the most frequent question that students ask?

“Easily CVs! Students ask for support with CVs – honing, tailoring and perfecting these, ready for the types of jobs that they are looking for.”

What advice would you give someone who is unsure of what career path they should take?

“I would say: Do your research, reflect on yourself, reflect on career paths and the job market. There’s some fantastic tools out there to help you find your role. Also you can come see me for a chat!”

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

“My favourite part is delivering 1-1 support and being able to help someone individually. I always feel so upbeat helping someone when they need it!”

What inspired you to become a careers advisor?

“Ironically, not knowing what I wanted to do myself! I worked for a company doing marketing but wanted to work more closely with people. That was the pivotal moment.”
