Music Media Masterclass – Industry Photographer Tom Ham Visits UCW

12/04/2022

UCW Photography, Film & Media and Professional Music degree students were recently treated to a very special guest lecture and workshop from distinguished photographer Tom Ham, who visited the Winter Gardens campus to pass on his industry expertise.

Tom Ham is a Bristol based photographer who specialises in portrait and documentary photography and working with musicians. His past clients have included Glastonbury Festival and VICE magazine. Recently Tom has gained global attention from his work with the band Idles, taking the photography for the cover of their latest album ‘CRAWLER’ which was released in 2021. Tom has also done stage photography for Idles at their Glastonbury debut in 2019, capturing the excitement and power of the performance.

This workshop was a collaboration between several courses, assisting with team building and cooperation skills. These courses were BA Photography and Visual Cultures, BA Film & Media Arts Production and BA Professional Music Performance and Production, all creative courses which can benefit from Tom’s specialist skills.

Taking pictures of musicians is a great skill for the photography learners to gain and learning how to model is important for the learners on the Professional Music course. Getting professional pictures done is a great way to boost your image as a musician and taking musicians pictures is a great way to earn money as a photographer.

Huge thanks to Tom for coming in and passing on your skills and experience from the industry, straight to our UCW learners.
