Josh at the UCW Awards

Alumni Work Showcases Somerset Heritage

29/01/2025

Former UCW student Josh was recognised for his incredible work photographing traditional willow farms and the work they do in growing and using these trees. Josh’s work ‘Somerset Willow Farmers’ highlights the work of Musgrove Willows in Westonzoyland. Josh took care to capture the skills and expertise of the willow farmers.

Josh chose this project as he wanted to connect with his home county of Somerset. By photographing the traditional crafts of the county, he was able to highlight the rare and unusual crafts from the willow farm. Musgrove Willows is one of only a few farms in the UK which make authentic willow coffins, which are captured in Josh’s project.

Josh aimed to create a piece of work which acts as an archive to preserve the story of the farmers for future generations. The project was on show at The Pressoir in Wells for Somerset Arts Week in October.

Josh’s lecturer Richard celebrated the project saying: “Josh was an extremely proactive student at UCW, it’s great to see his work, ‘The Somerset Willow Farmers’ being exhibited. Whilst at UCW, as well as producing several photography books and bodies of work, Josh also managed an international photography competition which was exhibited at Tropicana in Weston.

“Their group exhibition at Prior Gallery in Bristol was a huge success and Josh and others from the course showcased their work at ‘BOP’ – Bristol’s annual photobook festival.”

Deputy Head of Digital and Media Ross added: “Josh was a student that took advantage of every opportunity that his university course provided him, whether that be trips, guest lectures, work experience opportunities or entrepreneurial ventures.”

Rounding out the high praise, lecturer Sam said that: “Josh was supportive of peers and always looking for ways to engage with the wider photographic and creative community.”

This project working with a local employer forms part of the Art, Film, Game and Graphic Design Careers Excellence Hub. University Centre Weston has sector-specific Career Excellence Hubs, which evidence our dedication to supporting both employers and learners in achieving their future goals. By creating a seamless connection between industry and education, we enable learners to acquire not only the essential skills and knowledge but also the professional networks necessary to excel in their chosen fields.
