Mia and Lewis with their presentation

Alumni Lewis and Mia Return to UCW

12/03/2026

Two UCW alumni returned to share their career journeys and inspire the next generation of Computing students, offering valuable insights into working in the industry and securing roles with global aerospace company Boeing.

Lewis and Mia, who both previously studied at Weston College, now work in computing roles at Boeing. During their visit, they spoke to current computing students about their experiences progressing into highly skilled careers within the technology sector.

The session gave students a chance to hear first-hand what it is like to work in a major international organisation and how the skills they are developing now can translate into real-world opportunities.

Lewis and Mia began by explaining what their roles at Boeing involve, giving students an overview of the kinds of computing work they carry out as part of the company’s operations. They discussed how technology plays a crucial role in the aerospace industry, highlighting the importance of problem-solving, collaboration and continual learning in their day-to-day work.

They spoke openly about the journeys from Weston College to their careers; they reflected on the steps they took after completing their studies and the decisions that helped shape their paths.

A key focus of the talk was job searching. Lewis and Mia encouraged students to stay motivated and ambitious while also being realistic about the process. They explained that finding the right opportunity can take time and perseverance, and that gaining experience, continuing to build skills and remaining open to different opportunities can all play an important role in starting a career in the computing industry.

The alumni also spoke about some of the challenges they faced. From navigating the job market to adapting to new professional environments, they shared honest reflections on the obstacles they encountered and how they overcame them. By discussing these experiences, they reassured students that setbacks can be a normal part of career development and that persistence and resilience are key to success.

Their visit provided students with a valuable opportunity to hear from former learners who have successfully progressed into industry roles, helping to bridge the gap between education and employment.

These alumni guest speakers form part of the Digital and Computing Careers Excellence Hub. At University Centre Weston our approach goes beyond the traditional classroom setting. Through industry speakers, workshops, employer projects, and more, we equip our learners with the real-world experiences and insights that set them apart in the competitive job market. It’s not just about getting a job; it’s about standing out from the crowd when they embark on their job searches.

Thank you to Lewis and Mia for coming in and inspiring current students as they begin to plan their own career journeys! Find out more about our Digital and Computing courses by clicking here!
