Charlie & Casey giving their talk to T Level learners

MOD Degree Apprentices Share Their Knowledge

05/03/2026

Two of our Ministry of Defence degree apprentices spoke to the next generation of digital talent, delivering an insightful talk to T Level Computing students at Weston College.

Charlie and Casey, who are both currently completing the Digital and Technology Solutions degree apprenticeship within the Ministry of Defence, spoke to first and second year learners about their journeys into the industry, what their roles involve, and how students can follow in their footsteps. The session focused on explaining degree apprenticeships and showing just how accessible and rewarding they can be.

Working within Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S), the pair explained how their roles contribute to supporting the UK’s armed forces. They discussed the wide range of projects they are involved in giving students a real-world insight into how computing skills are applied in high-responsibility environments.

Charlie, who progressed from Weston College into his apprenticeship, spoke about his own pathway. He shared how he researched opportunities, prepared his application and built his confidence throughout the process. His story demonstrates that high-level careers within national organisations are achievable for Weston College students!

Both apprentices highlighted the importance of upskilling within DE&S, explaining how continuous professional development is embedded into their roles. Alongside gaining a degree, they are constantly developing new technical and professional skills, supported by mentors and structured training. They emphasised that a degree apprenticeship offers the best of both worlds: earning a salary, gaining hands-on industry experience and achieving a recognised qualification without student debt.

The benefits of working within the MOD were another key focus of the talk. From job security and competitive salaries to flexible working, career progression and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful national projects, Charlie and Casey were keen to show that public sector roles can offer both purpose and progression.

Students were also given a clear breakdown of entry requirements and practical advice for applying. The pair encouraged learners to pay close attention to application questions, demonstrate their enthusiasm, and draw on college projects or work experience to evidence their skills.

A particularly valuable part of the session was their honest reflection on “how they did it” – from managing nerves during interviews to balancing study with work commitments. Their openness helped make the pathway feel realistic and achievable.

For the T Level Computing students, hearing directly from two professionals who were recently in their position helped show the progression routes available. The session not only broadened their understanding of degree apprenticeships, but also reinforced the exciting opportunities available with national organisations in the local area.

This guest talk forms part of the Computing and Digital Careers Excellence Hub. University Centre Weston’s Career Excellence Hubs are designed to be the launching pad for our learners’ careers. In a world where connections and relevant skills matter more than ever, these hubs offer a holistic approach that prepares learners to thrive in their chosen industries. With the support of these hubs, our learners are well-equipped to make a significant impact in their professional journeys.
