Rosie Shows Dedication and Commitment through Volunteering

26/08/2025

Rosie’s journey in higher education is a testament to resilience, dedication, and a deep commitment to supporting others. Studying for a BA (Hons) in Education, Society and Childhood, Rosie balances her studies with raising four children and volunteering for Next Link, a domestic abuse support service. Her work involves supporting survivors, helping them access programmes like the Freedom Programme, which educates and empowers women to understand the cycle of abuse. Her mentor has praised her faultless communication skills, unwavering empathy, and the significant difference she makes in the lives of those she helps.

Originally studying Access to Higher Education in Nursing and Midwifery, Rosie discovered the Education, Society, and Childhood course at University Centre Weston as a pathway to her ultimate goal – becoming a social worker. The flexibility of the programme, along with the opportunity to top up to a postgraduate qualification in social work, made it the ideal choice. She also values the supportive and personal learning environment at UCW, noting that her tutors and the HEART team have been instrumental in helping her navigate challenges, including transitioning from full-time to part-time study to better manage her commitments.

Guest speakers, particularly those discussing trauma and social care, have been a highlight of her course, reinforcing her passion for making a difference in the lives of vulnerable individuals. Rosie’s dedication to volunteering alongside her studies has impressed both her mentors and her lecturers, leading to her nomination for this award and the possibility of securing a permanent role with Next Link after graduation.

Despite her modesty about her academic performance, Rosie’s resilience, determination, and commitment to helping others are what truly set her apart. Reflecting on her journey, she shares: “If someone had told me five years ago that I would be doing a degree, I wouldn’t have believed them. But here I am, feeling really positive about my future career.”

Her advice to prospective students? “If you want it, you won’t regret it. UCW is such a supportive environment, and there’s something here for everyone.”
