Alfie wins Digital and Media Student of the Year

23/06/2025

From starting as a quiet and uncertain Level 2 Media student at Weston College to becoming one of the most sought-after Directors of Photography on the BA Film and Media Arts Production course, Alfie Walsh’s journey is nothing short of inspiring.

Alfie has played a key role in numerous student productions, including the award-winning The Quiet Artist, filmed on location in Ghent, Belgium. He also directed Homecoming, shot in Cornwall, demonstrating his talent for visual storytelling. His expertise with cameras and his dedication to filmmaking have made him the go-to cinematographer among his peers, and he is always willing to support fellow students, mentoring those on Level 3 courses and sharing his knowledge.

Reflecting on his experience at UCW, Alfie credits the hands-on nature of the course for developing his practical filmmaking skills. “It’s helped everything – from using a camera to editing and planning a film. Learning the full process of filmmaking has been the most valuable experience.” He has also gained valuable industry experience filming live events such as UCW’s graduation and music gigs, as well as assisting in running a film festival, giving him insight into how films are selected and showcased professionally.

Alfie’s journey has not been without challenges. Having dyslexia, as well as navigating personal difficulties, including caring for a family member after a stroke, tested his resilience. However, the unwavering support of UCW’s tutors and HEART team helped him push through, “The tutors on the course are seriously the best of the best. They really know what they’re talking about and are just really good people.”

Achieving a First on his dissertation stands out as one of Alfie’s proudest academic achievements, and he is now eager to take his next steps into the industry. Whether working as a camera operator, director, or editor, his confidence, skillset, and determination have set him up for success.

To anyone considering studying at UCW, Alfie offers simple but powerful advice: “Give it a go!”
