For Folu, a BSc Criminology and Public Services student, one of the most memorable moments of his course was completing the primary research for his dissertation. Conducting interviews with people with relevant professional experience provided valuable insights and helped strengthen his work, while the ongoing support of UCW lecturers gave him the confidence and clarity to progress throughout his studies.
He would recommend the course to anyone considering studying at UCW, highlighting the range of opportunities and career pathways it can open up. He also emphasised the importance of actively engaging with learning activities and asking questions, helping students develop skills and knowledge that can support their future careers.
Reflecting on his time at UCW, Folu was keen to recognise the many staff and lecturers who supported him throughout his journey: Anna, Caroline, Chris, Jason, Clem, Terri, Christian Morgan, Chris Beynon, Pascalle, David, Mardi, Hannah, Kate, Elaine, Adam, Mike, Becky, Claire, Beth, Emma, Andy and Sadie.
His achievements were also recognised at the UCW Awards, where he was delighted to receive an award. “Winning the UCW Award was an unforgettable moment that filled me with pride, knowing I had made my family proud and contributed meaningfully to the UCW community.” He was particularly pleased to have his mum and friend Giuseppe there to share the occasion.
Beyond his studies, Folu’s time at UCW has been about much more than academic development. He described feeling a strong sense of belonging from the moment he arrived at UCW and Parkside, with friendships and supportive staff helping him settle in and build confidence. He also gave a special mention to Terri, Warden at Parkside House, for her positive attitude and commitment to creating a welcoming environment.
This year’s UCW Awards were especially significant as they coincide with the celebration of 10 years of UCW. Over the past decade, we have empowered thousands of learners to achieve their ambitions, building a vibrant community where talent, determination and opportunity thrive. As we mark this milestone, the awards provided the perfect opportunity to celebrate not only a decade of higher education excellence, but also the outstanding achievements, resilience and success of the students who continue to shape UCW’s story and inspire its future.
