UCW graduate Lauren has turned her passion for animal welfare into a career after securing a role as a Kennel Assistant at Whitehouse Kennels in Lympsham!
She studied BSc (Hons) Animal Conservation, Behaviour and Welfare, and credits the course with preparing her for working in the animal industry.
A key part of the course for Lauren was the focus on gaining experience through work placements. One of the work placements that Lauren took part in was at Whitehouse Kennels itself, which had been recommended for her by her course lecturers. After the placement ended, the experience gained at this business helped Lauren to gain her current role in the company!
Reflecting on her time learning hands-on at our Puxton Park satellite campus, Lauren said: “Studying at Puxton Park allowed me to learn real life skills through working with actual animals in practical scenarios rather than reading about what to do. This gave me the experience I needed to work with animals and reminded me that it wasn’t just cuddling animals. It was physically demanding but so worth it by the end of the day after knowing that I had cared for these animals in the best way possible!”
Lauren also praised the brilliant support of her teachers at UCW! “The lecturers made it so every lesson was enjoyable and I learnt a lot of things which I greatly appreciated. Even the complicated modules of data analysis still became fun and it was never overwhelming to learn the difficult stuff since the lecturers took such great care of us!”
UCW’s BSc (Hons) Animal Conservation, Behaviour and Welfare degree combines classroom learning with extensive practical experience, helping students develop the skills, knowledge and industry connections needed to succeed in careers across the animal and conservation sectors. Earlier this year, students on the course took an incredible trip to South Africa to learn conservation skills at the Welgevonden Game Reserve!
This work placement success story forms part of the Animal, Environment and Biological Studies Careers Excellence Hub. UCW has ten sector-specific Career Excellence Hubs, which evidence our dedication to supporting both employers and learners in achieving their future goals. By creating a seamless connection between industry and education, we enable learners to acquire not only the essential skills and knowledge but also the professional networks necessary to excel in their chosen fields.
This year, we are celebrating ten years of UCW! Over our time as a University Centre, we are proud to have transformed lives through education – helping people get ready for employment, or take the next step through their careers through upskilling.
