Students and staff from the Business Management & Sustainability programme recently welcomed representatives from North Somerset Council and the Centre for Sustainable Energy to campus for an engaging and thought-provoking initiative focused on the future of energy production and sustainability in the UK.
The visit provided learners with an opportunity to explore some of the most pressing environmental, economic, and social challenges facing communities today, while encouraging meaningful discussion around how energy is produced, distributed, and consumed. Central to the sessions was the urgent need to transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy systems in order to meet the UK’s climate targets and create a more resilient future.
With increasing global political and economic uncertainty continuing to impact energy supply and costs, discussions highlighted the growing importance of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. Students considered how the UK must significantly expand its use of renewable technologies in the coming years, not only to reduce carbon emissions, but also to strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on imported energy sources.
The initiative also explored the role of community energy projects and the benefits they can bring to local areas. Learners examined how communities can play an active role in generating and managing their own energy, helping to create more sustainable, affordable, and locally resilient systems. The sessions encouraged students to think critically about the balance between national infrastructure and localised energy solutions, as well as the long-term social and economic benefits of reducing reliance on the national grid.
By bringing together education, local government, and sustainability experts, the event provided valuable insight into real-world environmental challenges and demonstrated the importance of collaborative action in addressing climate change. Students were able to connect classroom learning with current industry and policy developments, gaining a deeper understanding of the role businesses, organisations, and communities all play in creating a more sustainable future.
The Business Management & Sustainability team were delighted to host the event and look forward to continuing to work with local partners to inspire learners and support positive environmental change across the region.
