Our Criminology and Public Services learners recently gained insight from one of their own, as former student Jemma returned to discuss her time in the prison service! Jemma works as a prison custody officer (PCO) at HMP Ashfield. During the guest lecture, Jemma discussed progression within prisons, as well as praising the pay progression that she has seen during her time as a PCO.
A key part of her development has been learning how to use communication effectively, particularly when it comes to de-escalating challenging situations. Through training and on-the-job experience, Jemma has gained confidence in using calm, controlled language to manage conflict and ensure safety for both staff and prisoners.
Jemma also highlighted the flexibility afforded by the shift patterns available at her work. This was a key benefit of the role for her, as she enjoys working in this way.
This guest speaker forms part of the Criminology Careers Excellence Hub. University Centre Weston’s Career Excellence Hubs are designed to be the launching pad for our learners’ careers. In a world where connections and relevant skills matter more than ever, these hubs offer a holistic approach that prepares learners to thrive in their chosen industries. With the support of these hubs, our learners are well-equipped to make a significant impact in their professional journeys.
A big thanks to Jemma for coming in and speaking to our learners! There’s still time to apply to our Criminology and Public Services course for 2026! Click here to find out more!
