Student Jack has successfully completed a four week HR placement with renowned food company Charlie Bigham’s, gaining valuable real-world experience in a professional workplace.
The opportunity was made possible through the support of Charmaine Hale-Lynch, Lecturer in Business and Tourism, and Sarah Roberts, Careers and Employability Co-ordinator, Who helped facilitate the placement as part of Jack’s degree in Business and Sustainability.
During his time with the company, Jack was able to immerse himself in the HR environment, contributing to key projects and gaining hands-on insight into the profession.
Reflecting on Jack’s time with the company, Phillip, Talent Advisor at Charlie Bigham’s shared:
“So we have come to the end of the placement with Jack and it has been a real pleasure having him with us for the last four weeks. During that time, he has been able to get fully immersed within our team and presented a proposal around digital learning to a group, including our People Director. He supported the launch of our new HR system and experienced multiple different areas of our People Team.”
Jack also took part in team meetings and leadership sessions, including the launch of the company’s new “English for Inclusivity” phase, giving him insight into inclusive workplace practices and HR strategy.
“He’s been keen to get involved in everything we asked him to do,” Phillip added. “But he’s also been able to work independently when needed, which has been great to see.”
Jack commented on the experience “Thank you to the amazing People Team at Charlie Bigham for making me feel so welcome, and for giving me such a valuable experience. This placement has given me a deeper appreciation for the strategic and human side of HR”.
This placement was part of Jack’s Business and Sustainability degree at UCW, which is designed to help learners build sector-specific knowledge and skills over a focused period of time. By working closely with respected employers like Charlie Bighams’s students are able to put their theory into practice, allowing them to explore real career opportunities within the industry
