Observing Animal Behaviour First-Hand at Puxton Park

28/10/2026

One of the key benefits of studying Animal Conservation, Behaviour and Welfare at UCW is the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with animals at our Puxton Park facility. Rather than learning solely from textbooks, our learners regularly take their lessons out into the park, where they can observe a variety of species, including alpacas, emus and many others. These practical sessions give learners the chance to see animal behaviour first-hand and apply the knowledge they develop in the classroom to real-life situations.

Recently, learners took part in behavioural observations, developing their understanding of how animals behave in different situations. Using an ethogram chart, each learner selected an animal to observe at timed intervals, carefully recording the behaviours they witnessed. This structured approach helps learners identify behavioural patterns, improve their observation skills and build a greater understanding of animal behaviour and welfare. Activities like these are an important part of developing the practical skills and knowledge needed to work with animals in conservation and welfare settings.

This Puxton Park activity forms part of the Animal, Environment and Biological Studies Careers Excellence Hub. At University Centre Weston our approach goes beyond the traditional classroom setting. Through industry speakers, workshops, employer projects, and more, we equip our learners with the real-world experiences and insights that set them apart in the competitive job market. It’s not just about getting a job; it’s about standing out from the crowd when they embark on their job searches.
