University Centre Weston (UCW) is hosting a gap year student from Germany who wanted to experience higher education before going off to university herself.

Sarah Hummel has been attending classes with students on the Foundation degree in Musical Theatre, which is delivered by UCW in partnership with Bath Spa University, for the past three weeks.

The 18-year-old, who grew up in Stuttgart but now lives in the Bavarian town of Fussen, is applying to universities in Berlin, Munich and Vienna, and wanted to take advantage of the specialist practice in singing, dancing and acting on offer at UCW before attending the universities’ auditions.

She said: “I want to act in musicals, so this time at UCW has been so helpful for my training.

“I like how everyone is invited in the morning to take part in a group workout for free in addition to the timetable, and the diversity in dance styles practiced here is also really great.

“The contextual studies side of the course has also been very interesting for me as it is important to know about the history of what you’re doing, and I’ve also learned a lot about directors and composers I’d never heard of before.

“You can’t always stick with what you know!”

Sarah has been staying in Weston during her time at UCW and plans to take in a show in London before going back to Germany.
