COURSEWORK
PRACTICAL
This course will help you realise your ambition of working for a public service in the civil service or education sectors as well as the more uniformed roles within the ambulance, fire, police, border force or prison services and the Army, Royal Navy and RAF. It has been developed with input from employers in the sector and provides relevant skills and knowledge to help you begin your career or gain promotion from an existing role. Our strong links with organisations in the uniformed and public services means that our students are continually engaging with the sector and have been successful in achieving their career aspirations as fire-fighters, crime analysts, 999 call handlers and detective constables to name but a few.
During your time on the course, you will study the role of society and how public services engage with its different elements, criminology, and the globalised society and the impact this has on uniformed and public services. You will also conduct your own research into the uniformed and public services, explore leadership and management techniques and current contemporary issues within the sector. Furthermore, we realise that your own health and wellbeing is important in any future employment so you will examine your own personal resilience and learn about stress management techniques.
Students from this course have also recently visited workplaces relevant to their studies, including the Avon and Somerset Police HQ and the organisation’s Hydra immersive training centre. Thanks to these fantastic industry connections, we are able to welcome great guest speakers from organisations including Avon Fire and Rescue, North Somerset Council and the South Western Ambulance Service. There is also the possibility to undertake overseas residential trips at an additional cost which have previously included visits to Iceland and Gambia.
The course is taught at our Winter Gardens Campus in the centre of Weston-super-Mare. By enrolling, you’ll benefit from the modern teaching and learning facilities at our multimillion pound redevelopment of the iconic Winter Gardens building, situated on Weston seafront.
