Apprentice Environmental Health Officer

The apprentice will work towards achieving the relevant skills, competencies and qualifications in order to be able to:

  • Undertake supervised work-based learning in all areas of Environmental Health, including, but not limited to public health, food safety, health and safety, environmental protection and housing standards
  • Attend and pass the Environmental Health Practitioner BSc (Hons) (Degree Apprenticeship) Level 6 qualification at UCW University Centre Weston, Weston Super Mare. Delivered in partnership with UWE Bristol. Start Date September 2024
  • Participate in ongoing reviews, complete all required training and develop the skills to work independently in the field of Environmental Health
  • Engage and demonstrate successful learning of the technical and legislative aspects of the role whilst providing support to officers across Environmental Health.
  • This will include auditing and issuing of licences, consultation responses, sampling, monitoring and surveys, site inspections and visits to domestic and business premises to carry out interventions, inspections or investigate complaints which may include enforcement activities
  • Provide intelligence led courteous and professional responses to written and verbal enquiries from a range of individuals and organisations in line with Council priorities and policies
  • Attend and participate in various meetings about Environmental Health and Housing matters, helping to develop and maintain effective communications and good partnership working relationships with other service areas and external organisations
  • Participate in project work and carry out other duties as may be required across Environmental Health and Community safety
  • Prepare and submit reports with recommendations on a diverse range of subjects which may be within policy guidelines or as the result of research or investigation of new issues which may result in the formulation or amendment of policies, practices and procedures
  • Take personal responsibility for delivering against work-based learning commitments and training requirements
  • Responsible to the Team leader/Manager who sets overall priorities and workload and gives guidance on matters of policy
  • The post holder is expected to exercise initiative and professional judgement
